Among the European members of the OECD, educational mobility is the worst in Hungary. This means that children cannot overcome the disadvantages arising from their socio-economic status in the Hungarian education system. The extent of these inequalities varies from settlement to settlement and county to county.
InDaHouse works in settlements that are located in the poorest region of the country, Eastern Hungary, where people with lower socio-economic status live. Through educational programs, the organization aims to provide children with tools for self-knowledge, self-realization, and social mobility.
I have been a member of the team for four years as a learning tool developer and mentor for newcomers. I have been creating personalized worksheets for two children since they were in first grade. In our education program, children have the opportunity to choose the topic of the worksheet from week to week. I am amazed by the wide interest of these children and thanks to them, I got to learn more about space travel, World War II, famous bank robberies, the history of Audi, the life of panthers, and much more. In addition to selecting the theme of the exercise sheet, children have the opportunity to reflect on the tasks. For example, they can name the exercise they enjoyed the most. They can also evaluate the worksheet. By giving control to the children over the learning process, our sessions become more child-driven, personal, and fun.
The past year looked a bit different because of the pandemic, InDaHouse had to change the way it operates, and the focus shifted to supporting children in digital education. Research already shows that the pandemic will increase inequalities in education, so the work of organizations like InDaHouse, is much needed. Therefore, I ask you to support our fundraising campaign and with it the work of InDaHouse.
